Heartland Men's Chorus
Heartland Men’s Chorus (HMC) is currently celebrating its twenty-thrid season. Based in Kansas City, Missouri, this 140-voiced men’s chorus comprised of gay or gay sensitive men, regularly performs to sell out audiences at their home in the historic downtown Folly Theater. Among the achievements of HMC include nine CD recordings, two DVDs, numerous commissions by various leading composers, collaborations with other choruses, and outreach performances across the United States, Canada, and Europe. The vision of Heartland Men’s Chorus is that “our voices enlighten, inspire, heal, and empower.” Part of the fulfillment of that vision is through the interest session: Let Freedom Ring: Songs of Civil Rights, where the chorus explores music that helped define the political, social and religious struggles of the twentieth century.
This season marks Joseph P. Nadeau’s eleventh year as artistic director of the Heartland Men’s Chorus (HMC). He received a BM in music education from the University of Maine, and an MA in choral conducting from the University of Missouri—Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Recently, Nadeau received a DMA in choral conducting at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
Since Nadeau’s arrival in 1998, the HMC membership has grown to over 130 singers and more than 150 active members. Under his direction, the chorus has performed in various cities throughout the United States and in 2002, completed a European tour, performing in London, Paris, and Hamburg. The chorus performs regularly at many festivals, conferences and events, which included an invitation to sing at the national 2003 Chorus America conference.
In addition to his work with the chorus, Nadeau is also vocal music director at Mission Valley Middle School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas and serves as conductor and clinician at festivals and performances on the regional and state levels. He is a member of ACDA, MENC, the Chorister’s Guild, Chorus America, and GALA Choruses.
