University of Nebraska Lincoln

The University of Nebraska’s Varsity Men’s Chorus is dedicated to the service of the University, the state, its members, and to the art of music. Membership is open to any male singer enrolled in the university. A non-auditioned group, students from throughout the University are encouraged to participate.

They have performed for state conventions of the Nebraska CDA, Nebraska MEA plus appearances at ACDA North Central Division Conventions and were chosen to perform on the Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses National Convention. They have also performed at the MENC Divisional convention in January of 2003 and the MENC National Convention in Minneapolis in 2004. The choir performed the musical soundtrack for the Nebraska Educational Television documentary Husker Century broadcast statewide, recorded a number of tracks for the Pride Of the Huskers CD and recently released a popular CD of traditional hymns and sacred favorites.They have performed the Brahms Requiem, Lizst’s Christus, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and Fauré’s Requiem to name just a few.

Peter Eklund was trained as a classical pianist and organist. His choirs have performed at ACDA division and national conventions. Eklund has conducted at Carnegie Hall, Washington DC’s Kennedy Center, National Cathedral, and Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis, St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Christ Church in Oxford, Mozart’s Salzburg Cathedral (where he conducts yearly), Paris’s Notre Dame (also conducting yearly), St. Stephen’s in Vienna, St. John the Divine and Alice Tully Hall in NYC, and in other famous cathedrals, abbeys, and performance halls in New York, Chicago, London, Coventry, Canterbury, Chartres, Reims, Rouen, Mt St. Michel, Lucerne, Metz, Strasbourg, Paris, and Verona.        

Eklund studied conducting and score-study with Don V Moses, International Mahler Medal-winner James Dixon, and ACDA past president William Hatcher. Recent engagements include conducting all-state choirs in Minnesota, Colorado, Indiana, South Dakota, Georgia, and Alabama, master classes and adjudicating/clinic work in Hawaii, California, Florida, Virginia, New York, Iowa, Arizona, Missouri, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Chicago, collaborating with NETV on a state-wide collegiate choral broadcast (nominated for regional Emmy), conducting a regional ACDA honor choir, and directing a summer youth honor choir trip to ten countries.
