St. Mary's Varsity Ensemble
In its ninth year, the Varsity Ensemble has made concert tours to the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, and Hungary; won top awards and honors a competitions and festivals in Japan and the USA, have appeared on Japanese national radio and television, in concert with internationally acclaimed Japanese-American opera singer John Ken Nuzzo, and perform annually for members of the Japanese Imperial Family. They are involved in the Tokyo community through charity work, especially Refugees International.
Members of the ensemble meet for twenty minutes each day and are encouraged to realize their music through expressive movement. The Ensemble has performed at the 2008 ACDA NW Convention in Vancouver, 2006 ACDA Central Division Convention in Chicago, 2005 ACDA National Convention in Los Angeles, 2004 ACDA NW Convention in Boise, and was an invited choir by the Japan Choral Association in a concert honoring the work of Maria Guinand. The choir seeks to nurture a love for and global awareness of music from many cultures and the spiritual heritage that embodies St. Mary’s International School.
Randy Stenson is instructor of vocal music at St. Mary`s International School in Tokyo, Japan where he conducts the St. Mary`s Men`s Choir, Varsity Male Ensemble, International Show Choir, and teaches elementary general music.
His groups have gained international recognition for their musicianship and expressiveness in concert. Randy is a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota where he studied and sang under Paul J. Christiansen and Larry L. Fleming. Additionally, he has continued choral studies through master classes with Rodney Eichenberger and earned a MME at VanderCook College of Music while studying choral conducting with Robert Sinclair. Mr. Stenson edits the Randy Stenson Male Choral Series for Pavane Publishing, co-edits (with his wife, Rachel), the Stenson Choral Series for Santa Barbara Music Publishing, and is active as a adjudicator-clinician and guest conductor.
