The Brearley Singers, a non-auditioned mixed chorus of 80+ voices, affiliated with the Brearley School in New York City, is currently accepting applications for the position of Music Director, to commence the summer of 2010. We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented conductor to lead us in our 17th Season and beyond. Our Director will plan the program for our annual two-concert season, which consists of a December Holiday program in collaboration with the Brearley School Music Department, and a spring concert with orchestra. Candidates should have experience conducting amateur choral groups and be able to conduct soloists and instrumentalists. The Director should be able to share vocalization techniques during chorus warm-ups and rehearsals as appropriate. The ideal candidate will possess both the professional and inter-personal skills necessary for teaching and leading singers of different levels of musical ability. The Music Director is responsible for hiring an accompanist, plus soloists and instrumentalists as needed. We offer a fixed fee per season. Previous works performed include Requiems by Mozart, Fauré and Duruflé, Bach Cantata 196, Haydn’s Paukenmesse, Mozart Vespers K. 339, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and the Christmas Cantata by Daniel Pinkham.
Our rehearsals are Monday evenings, September to May. Rehearsals take place at the Brearley School, 610 East 83rd Street, just east of East End Avenue, in Manhattan. Our December performance is typically at the school, and the spring performance is held at an outside venue.
