Chorus Director Needed for Dallas Symphony

JOB DESCRIPTION 
 

The Director of the Dallas Symphony Chorus, one of America’s pre-eminent symphonic choruses, oversees an all-volunteer, 220-voice ensemble which sings a minimum of three subscription programs per season with the Dallas Symphony as well as two weeks of Christmas Celebration concerts every December. The chorus also sings programs, both at home and on tour, without the Dallas Symphony. Its schedule has included concerts at Carnegie Hall and tour performances in Europe, Israel and South America. It can be heard on several commercial recordings in Mahler’s Second and Third Symphonies, Prokofiev’sAlexander Nevsky, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and a disc of opera choruses, among other works. During its 2009-10 season it will be heard with the Dallas Symphony in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Orff’s Carmina Burana and Mahler’s Second Symphony. In May of 2011 it is scheduled to perform with the Dallas Symphony at Carnegie Hall. 

The Dallas Symphony Chorus Director is responsible for overseeing every aspect of the Dallas Symphony’s choral program, including maintaining high artistic standards, recruiting and auditioning chorus singers, and preparing them for performances (which are often led by other conductors). The Director must exhibit the highest artistic and professional standards in performance and in training, rehearsing, motivating and retaining chorus singers. Candidates must show demonstrable experience and success in conducting large choruses and professional orchestras.  

The Chorus rehearses nearly every Monday evening. During performance weeks, the chorus is needed every evening for rehearsals and concerts. The Chorus Director’s presence is needed on those evenings. The Chorus Director must work with the Dallas Symphony Music Director and the artistic staff to assist in the selection of repertoire for choral programs. The Director must also on occasion represent the Dallas Symphony at various civic and social functions.
