The International Anton Bruckner Choir Competition is both an international choir competition with various categories of different levels of achievement for amateur choirs and presents itself at the same time as a Festival of Choral Music in which choirs from all over the world can give concerts and make the most of the atmosphere of this international event. ChorFreude International Music Festival

Sponsor: Incantato Tours; Charlotte International Cabinet; Ministery for Culture and Education
Location: German Baltic Coast; Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany

Info: The Ministery of Culture and Education is rolling out the red carpet on the beautiful, historic, and musically rich German Baltic Coast in celebration of the 250th anniversary of Queen Charlotte’s coronation. You are invited to join other outstanding vocal ensembles to perform at this groundbreaking event. Invitation from the Ministery of Culture, Education and Economics, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Mr. Staatssekretär Udo Michallik: “The German Baltic Coast is not well known internationally, but a hidden treasure: Fairy-tale castles with beautiful gardens, medieval cathedrals and churches, and spectacular ocean boardwalk will not only impress you, but provide a stunning backdrop for unforgettable concerts. The Ministery of Culture, Education, and Economics Mecklenburg-Vorpommern supports the 2011 International Choral Festival celebrating the 250th anniversary of Queen Charlotte’s coronation, who was originally from Mecklenburg-Strelitz. I look forward to welcoming many choirs… to this unique cultural event in the home of Sophie Charlotte: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.”

ChorFreude is a word play on the German words for choir (chor), and joy (freude), with the inspiration drawn from another German term, Vorfreude which can be loosely translated as happy anticipation. ChorFreude is also the title for a new international choral festival that showcases an unknown gem of Germany—the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. You may have heard of the rich natural beauty and cultural, as well as historical significance of the Baltic Coast, but people rarely make the connection that there is also a German Baltic coast with a very strong music-making tradition. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV) State boasts hundreds of choirs and choral organizations, with many of them celebrating Germany’s heritage and traditions.

In the summer of 2011, MV is looking forward to hosting international choral groups for the very first time in quite unique settings. Venues range from ancient churches and haunted castles, to elaborately decorated palaces and stunning cathedrals - all with wonderful acoustics and appreciative audiences that can’t wait to embrace singers from the new world. ChorFreude is an initiative that was born to reach out and start a friendship between musicians from both sides of the big pond. Supported by the MV State Ministery of Culture and Education, as well as the local tourism boards, ChorFreude2011 offers unique opportunities to connect through the universal language of music. Venues which are normally closed to performing groups or only available to professional ensembles will become available, such as the former residence of Queen Charlotte in the beautiful village of Mirow. Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, consort of King George III, devoted much of her powers to the advancement of music in the kingdom. As a connoisseur and enthusiast of the great George Frideric Handel, Queen Charlotte displayed an avid interest in all German artists and composers. She often commissioned a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to perform for the royal court, and even employed the son of Johann Sebastian Bach as her personal music master. The ChorFreude International Music Festival honors the 250th anniversary of Queen Charlotte’s coronation, celebrating the legacy of one of Germany’s most dedicated musical advocates.  ChorFreude features •   Featured performances at magnificent venues such as the Schwerin Cathedral, the Landestheater, and Konzertkirche. •      Opportunities for exchanges with fellow musicians, German schools, and performing ensembles. • Participation at the official grand re-opening celebration of the Castle Mirow where Queen Charlotte was raised.  •       Personalized itinerary with various sightseeing options, such as a visit to the historic Schwerin Castle, swimming in the Baltic Sea, and a traditional Float Tour in the town of Neustrelitz.

Incantato Tours offers unique travel packages to accommodate the special needs of all festival attendees.
All packages include:

Title:Oregon Bach Festival

Eugene, Portland, and other cities in Oregon

Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, his Goldberg Variations, and the connections they forged form the bedrock
of the Oregon Bach Festival’s 42nd season. Based in Eugene with a four-concert series in Portland,
the University of Oregon also performs in five other Oregon cities with a lineup that includes
keyboardist Angela Hewitt, the Portland Baroque Orchestra, and pop orchestra Pink Martini. In his
penultimate season as artistic director, Helmuth Rilling will conduct the St. Matthew as the
grand finale in Eugene, and as an extesnions of the Festivla’s conducting master cass, lead four
lecture-concerts that fully explore the monumental work.  Opening weekend performances to be conducted
by Rilling June 29 in Eugene and June 30 in Portland will spotlight masterworks by Mendelssohn,
the composer who spurred Bach interest with his revival of the St. Matthew Passion in 1829.
More than two hundred years after the St. Matthew Passion, British composer Michael Tippett translated
its structure and emotional impact into the modern classic A Child of Our Time. British conductor Matthew Halls,
who succeeds Rilling as the Festival’s artistic director after the 2013 season, will conduct.
Halls will open the concert with Bach’s celebratory G major Lutheran Mass. Bach’s Goldberg Variations
is the other thread to weave through the fabric of the 2012 Festival, in a year that marks major birth
and death anniversaries of Glenn Gould, the enigmatic genius closely associated with the work. Events
include a four-city tour by Monica Huggett and the Portland Baroque Orchestra, performing a string
orchestra arrangement of the variations; showings of two award-winning films based on Gould’s life;
and the acclaimed pianist Hewitt performs the set on piano July 14. Tickets are on sale March 21.

Info: Each year the College Board sponsors a course called the Advanced Placement Course in Music
Theory that culminates in a national examination in the spring. This course permits young musicians to take
college-level work while in high school. Students who perform well on the examination may earn credit
and advanced standing in college programs - both an academic and financial advantage for these students.
This course is open to people who have never taught the AP course before as well as those who have
experience in teaching the course and would like new ideas and insights.

Most AP music teachers are musicians who received training in music theory only as part of their own
college study. Besides giving these teachers the skills and strategies they need to teach music theory to high
school students and discussing the examination’s content and scoring, emphasis is on how to approach the
subject material with confidence. The course is presented by Westminster faculty member Joel Phillips,
who was the Chief Faculty Consultant for the AP Examination in Music Theory. In addition to sitting with

the committee of examiners that creates these tests, he was responsible for setting the scores, reviewing
the applications of those who wish to be readers for the examination and managing the scoring of the
examination each summer. Dr. Phillips, Elizabeth West Marvin and Jane Clendinning are authors of The
Musician’s Guide to Aural Skills, W. W. Norton.

Kodály Certification I-IV

Sponsor: Westminster Choir College of Rider University
Location: Princeton, New Jersey

Info: Westminster Choir College, one of the first institutions in the country to offer teacher preparation
courses in the Kodály approach, continues to provide opportunities for teachers to develop their personal
musicianship, along with practical applications for the classroom. The Organization of American Kodály
Educators (OAKE)–endorsed Westminster Choir College Kodály Institute offers instruction by an
internationally respected faculty in the areas of solfège and musicianship, methodology and curriculum
development, and folk and art music collection, analysis and retrieval. Students have opportunities to
explore special topics in music education, such as the application of Kodály’s principles with children’s
choirs, the use of technology in collection and retrieval, instrumental application, and studies in the music
of selected regional and cultural groups and their music. Additionally, students enhance their own musical
skills through daily participation in a choral ensemble, along with daily solfège classes at their own levels.

To earn Westminster’s OAKE-endorsed Kodály certificate, participants must complete 240 hours of course
work. The certification program requires students attend four, two-week courses in four summers. Levels
I, II, III and IV are taken in sequence, with pedagogical topics and musicianship building upon content
and skills explored and developed in each previous level. Additionally, participants must complete a
one-week conducting class and a one-week chamber ensemble class, selected from Westminster’s many
unique and available summer course offerings. (The two classes may be taken within the four summers
or in a fifth summer, or through Westminster’s Saturday Seminars during the school year.) This option
provides an opportunity to study with some of the most well-respected and cutting-edge guest conductors
and lecturers in the world, and to experience a wide variety of ensemble experiences, from handbells to
masterwork chorales. Other requirements include the completion of a song collection and retrieval system
and videotaped teaching assignments.

Placement in levels is based on previous Kodály training. Due to the sequential nature of the instruction
and assignments, students who have taken Level I, II or III at an institution other than Westminster Choir
College should consult the faculty and course director for approval before enrolling in a specific level.
The faculty and staff wish to ensure that each student’s musical and intellectual needs are met in the most
effective manner, and all decisions regarding enrollment are made with consideration of the student’s best
interest. A certificate of attendance is issued upon satisfactory completion of each level. Students who
complete Level IV coursework and requirements are awarded Certification by the Westminster Choir
College, Kodály Institute, endorsed by the OAKE.

YogaVoice

Sponsor: Westminster Choir College of Rider University
Location: Princeton, New Jersey

Info: Classical hatha yoga is an ancient system of personal growth and self-discovery. It is both a science
and an art and as such, has many benefits for the singer. As a science, it teaches and provides tools for
clear, unencumbered mind/body action. As an art, it provides a paradigm for authenticity in artistic
expression.

The YogaVoice Intensive is a week-long course designed to explore the “eight-limbed” approach of
classical hatha yoga as set forth in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (yama, niyama, asana, pranayama,
pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi) and to make application of these principles to the lives and
work of classical singers and performing artists. Lectures and discussions compliment daily practice
in yoga postures, breathing techniques, and concentration/meditation techniques. While the topics are
directed toward yoga’s application for singers, participants in other disciplines (e.g., conductors, pianists,
pedagogues) may also benefit from the program.

Title: Choral Workshop "Stabat Mater" - International Oratorio Choir

Sponsor: MusikReisenFaszination
Location: Lake Garda, Italy
Info: Who is the International Oratorio Choir?
International Oratorio Choir (Artisitc Director Peter Laskowski) is a
great international choir participating in music projects, with which you
may again perform the oratorios you know in an international lineup.

Who can take part in the project?
Whole choirs or parts thereof with at least 10 singers

What are the terms and conditions for singers?
- own choral scores (published by Kalmus Music) of Stabat Mater (G.
Rossini), you can order it from us
- some rough knowledge of the piece (e.g. having worked through it
yourself or indeed having performed it on a previous occasion)
- commitment to attend all the rehearsals throughout the project phase

Which piece will be worked on together?
Gioacchino Rossini’s Stabat Mater is the central piece of church music
written by this Italian opera composer. It is based on a mediaeval poem
called Stabat Mater Dolorosa. Following Italian traditions of church music,
Rossini divided the mediaeval sequence in Stabat Mater into clearly
separated solo and ensemble movements. The care with which he undertook
this task is reflected in the fact that he used no material from earlier
works whatsoever. Stabat Mater contains both operatic elements and features
of church music: lively melodic patterns and dynamic rhythms can be found
alongside contrapuntal sections composed in the old style.

Where will the rehearsals be held?
On Lake Garda in Italy the International Oratorio Choir will be using the
rehearsal rooms.
The lake presents a wonderful spectacle of natural luminescence and
colours for an unforgettable musical event.

Where and when the concert will take place?
The oratory will be held at the Concert Hall in Riva del Garda (Italy) on
20 October 2012 at 20:00 hrs
within the context of he Lago di Garda Music Festival.
