Indianapolis Symphonic Choir Launches
Christmas Carol Competition for Young Composers

INDIANAPOLIS, IND – June 30, 2009 – The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir unveils its national Christmas Carol Competition as part of its commitment to the future of choral music. Submitted works must be original and unpublished; between 3 and 5 minutes long; written for SATB, mixed adult choir; and may be a cappella or utilize keyboard accompaniment. Text and language are at the discretion of the composer, and should be suitable for a Christmas/holiday performance.

Composers 35 years of age or younger as of September 14, 2009 who are United States citizens or legal residents may submit one composition in manuscript form via mail with a $25 entry fee to the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir by September 14, 2009:

The winner will be notified by October 1, 2009, and the selected composition will be performed by the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir at its annual “Festival of Carols” performances in Indianapolis, Indiana, December 5 and 6, 2009. A cash price of $1,000 and travel to the world premiere will be awarded to the winning composer.

Questions may be emailed to commission@indychoir.org. Compositions submitted electronically or in audio form will not be accepted; all pieces must be submitted via USPS and received by September 14, 2009. Composers who desire that their materials be returned to them must enclose a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage.

The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir is a 501(c)3 non-profit performing arts organization based in Indianapolis, and 2009-2010 marks its 73rd season. A frequent artistic partner with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Symphonic Choir is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, administered by a professional staff, and is made up of more than 150 singers, auditioned annually, who perform more than 25 concerts each season reaching more than 25,000 persons.
