POSITION Associate Director of Choral Activities

RANK AND SALARY Assistant Professor. Nine-month, tenure-track appointment beginning Fall Semester, August 1, 2010. Salary and fringe benefits are competitive and commensurate with rank and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS Doctorate required (ABD considered, but must be completed by starting date of 8-1-10). Proven successful experience as a choral director at the college/university level preferred. At least three years successful public school experience and a commitment to teacher training are required. Ability to teach courses in vocal music education. Demonstrated abilities in organization, and communicating and working effectively with faculty, students, and colleagues in the field. Commitment to preparing high quality pre-service music educators in a collaborative and collegial teaching and learning environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES This position is a critical blend between choral conducting and vocal music methods. This faculty member will conduct a major choral ensemble, teach courses in vocal music education and conducting, coordinate and supervise course-related field experiences, supervise student teachers, and advise music education majors. The successful candidate will maintain an active schedule of recruitment and guest conducting, provide workshops and actively participate in professional choral and music education organizations, develop regional and national visibility as an ensemble director and educator, and develop and maintain positive relationships with secondary school choral directors. The candidate will assist the Director of Choral Activities in student recruitment and organizational aspects of the university choral program. The candidate will maintain a record of creative/scholarly activity and service contributions appropriate for a university faculty member.

CHORAL PROGRAM Choral performances at the University of Tennessee have been a tradition for more than a half-century. UT Choral Ensembles have appeared on the regional, national and international stage. Choral study includes undergraduate degrees in performance, music education, and church music. Advanced choral studies include graduate programs leading to the Master of Music in Choral Conducting or Music Education. Graduates of the School of Music hold choral positions throughout the United States in public schools, churches, colleges, and universities.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC The School of Music is a part of the College of Arts & Sciences. The school offers a broad and comprehensive professional music program at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
