Session II

Horace, Morris, Dolores and Chorus: Implementing Group Audition Procedures - James F. Daugherty Watch preview

Tension in the Balance & Common Voice Science Issues for the Choral Conductor - Duane Cottrell & Brian Galante Watch preview
This session will summarize and highlight recent scientific research findings in the area of voice science and pedagogy as they apply to choral conductors. The topics include such areas as nasal/mask resonance, vibrato and singer health, choral acoustics, onset techniques, and choral breathing. The session will be both practical and applicable as all research findings will be applied to real-life choral rehearsal situations and best practices will be suggested.
Cenotaph - The Development of the 2009 ACDA Brock Memorial Commission - Dominick Argento Watch preview
Composer Dominick Argento discusses the process of creating a new choral work from inception through development, revision and the first performance. Learn how to best work with a composer to commission a work for your own ensemble.

Session III

Sight Reading and Ear Training in the Choral Rehearsal - Will Breytspraak Watch preview
Learn a broad gamut of engaging techniques for teaching sight-reading in the choral rehearsal that work in tandem with the methods or melodic material you already use. Watch this session to experience games such as Backwards Reading of Melodies, Staccatto Pulse Singing, The Singing Snake, Name the Tune and more.
Taking Joy in the "Imperfect" Rehearsal - Timothy Seelig Watch preview
Does a "perfect" researsal even exist? The exciting tips Seelig will share with you will move you closer to that elusive perfect rehearsal with organizational skills and fresh inspiration. Viewers will gain new knowledge about ways to maximize rehearsal time to the fullest which will lead to more efficient, effective, productive rehearsals... and to a better choir. Seelig will take you on an entertaining journey through the ins and outs of rehearsing your chorus, after which you'll never look at rehearsals the same way again.

Session IV

Presenting Bach's Cantatas in Context - Melvin Unger & Mary Greer Watch preview
Drawing on their own performance experience, Unger and Greer will demonstrate ways in which Bach's sacred cantatas can be presented in context - ranging from recreation of a Leipzig liturgy to a concert featuring cantatas written for the same liturgical occasion and therefore linked by theme. Their suggestions and resource materials for recreating aspects of the works' original religious, literary, and dramatic context should prove stimulating to conductors who want to bring these works to life for the modern listener.
From the True North, Strong and Free: Canadian Choral Music - Diane Loomer and Chor Leoni Watch preview
Canada is a young country with an abundance of terrain and plenty of room for the adventurous spirit. Her folk songs celebrate this spirit with stories about lumberjacks and loggers, fishermen and sailors, frontiersmen and explorers, cowboys and sod busters, miners and men on the railroad. One hears songs of the prairies, songs of the mountains, songs of the Great Lakes, and songs of the oceans; songs of love, or adventure, of danger; of loneliness, of longing, of dreams and memories. The tunes are often lifting, happy, robust and boisterous, but they can also be plaintive, reflective, and deeply sad in the loneliness of isolation. Explore this treasury of stories - sing with the lions.

Session V

Making Waves- Bob Chilcott Watch preview
Bob Chilcott presents his Upper Voice music and discusses the motivation and creative process behind his compositions. Chilcott also workshops some of his own repertoire and explores how best to bring his music to life.
Warm Ups With Style - Jason Paulk Watch preview
This workshop focuses on at least one musical example from each historic era, involving specific discussion about ideals of vocal production as enumerated in primary sources, as well as in-depth discussion on how to create warm-ups to acheive these vocal ideals.

Practical Teaching Ideas for Today’s Music Educator -Terry Barham, Editor

Welcome to the fifth issue of ACDA’s new online magazine for choral director/music educators who are searching for answers and need fresh ideas or techniques to meet practical needs. The articles below have been gleaned from state ACDA newsletters around the United States.

ChorTeach, our name, is derived from the German word for chorus, chor. It is pronounced, as most of you know, like the word, core. I hope ChorTeach’s articles will be a breath of fresh air for you, provide you with a few ideas or techniques that give you a lift and help your singers reach the goals you and they have set. ChorTeach is designed for those of you who work with amateur singers at all levels.

Do you have a favorite article from a previous state newsletter you would like to share with colleagues from around the world? Scan it. Email it to me—Word format only. I’ll look it over. Be sure to include the following information: state newsletter title, volume and issue number, year, title of the article, author of the article, your name and email address. Articles chosen for inclusion in ChorTeach can be reprinted only with permission of the parent state newsletter.
