Charlotte Y. Kroeker (she/her). Author, Professor (University & Seminary), Pianist, Organist/church musician. Executive Director, Church Music Institute, Dallas, TX. Ordained Presbyterian (PCUSA) elder, with additional experience in Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, Catholic, DOC, Mennonite traditions. Dr. Kroeker came to Dallas from the University of Notre Dame where she held a faculty research position in church music. She is the author of The Sounds of Our Offerings: Achieving Excellence in Church Music, is editor of Music in Christian Worship, and has published numerous articles on church music. She is a frequent lecturer on topics related to church music.

“Informed by the Past, Committed to the Present, Preparing for the Future” describes a session presented by the Church Music Institute that will journey through the history of sacred choral music to highlight significant events from early music through the latest sacred music. The session will address these questions: (1) What can we learn from the past to inform church music today? (2) How can church music make a difference in my congregation and community? (3) Why has worship inspired some of the most beautiful choral music ever written? (4) How can sacred music work to its greatest advantage in worship? (5) In what ways have notable church musicians thought about their vocations? (6) What present day researchers undergird the importance of music and what are implications for church music? (7) Does the music in your church inspire congregations and communities with the best of choral music? (8) How can thoughtful planning for coherent spoken and sung worship create transcendent worship that changes lives? (9) What resources plumb the depths of sacred choral music yet allow for differing resources in particular congregations? In particular, the Church Music Institute online choral libraries use 18 different criteria for searching curated choral music of more than 27,000 titles. Users may select music appropriate for choirs of any size for a successful offering, music that is tied to scripture and theological themes of the day. A demonstration of the libraries search capabilities and repertoire will be included in the presentation. Attendees of this presentation will be reminded of the extensive sacred choral music repertoire, leave with creative and effective methods for using this music, and be challenged to inspire choirs and congregations with well-selected music for worship using resources provided by the Church Music Institute.
