Emporia State University

Joshua Donaldson is the Director of Choral Activities at Emporia State University where he leads three ensembles and teaches classes in conducting, choral methods, and music theory. He is an active choral artist, singing with KC VITAs. He clinics choirs across Kansas and most recently was the clinician for the SEKMEA District Honor Choir. His research focuses on creating inclusive choral classrooms as well as emphasizing women composers and LGBTQIA+ composers. He holds a B.M.E, M.M. in Choral Conducting, and M.M. in Vocal Performance from Pittsburg State University, and a D.M.A. in Choral Conducting from the University of Kansas.

Fostering inclusivity is crucial in today’s diverse educational landscape. This session aims to empower music educators with strategies for creating welcoming and supportive environments for LGBTQIA+ students. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by this community, we will explore proactive approaches to ensure all students feel valued and respected in music classrooms.

Participants will delve into the significance of inclusivity in music education, examining how it not only enriches the learning experience but also cultivates empathy and understanding among students. Through interactive discussions, attendees will gain insights into the specific needs and concerns of LGBTQIA+ students in musical settings. Throughout the session, participants will discuss and learn about the following topics:

  1. Understanding LGBTQIA+ terminology and identities: Providing educators with foundational knowledge to better understand and support their LGBTQIA+ students.
  2. Cultivating a safe and affirming classroom culture: Strategies for creating an environment where all students feel comfortable expressing themselves authentically.
  3. Inclusive curriculum development: Incorporating diverse musical perspectives and narratives that resonate with LGBTQIA+ students.
  4. Addressing bias and discrimination: Equipping educators with tools to effectively address and challenge stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination in music education.
  5. Supporting LGBTQIA+ students’ mental health and well-being: Identifying resources and implementing practices to promote the emotional welfare of all students.

By the end of the session, participants will leave with actionable insights and resources to foster inclusivity and celebrate diversity in their music classrooms. Together, we will learn how to create a space where every student’s voice is heard and valued.
