Ryan Sullivan

Ryan Sullivan is the director of choral activities at Arkansas State University, where the choirs have appeared in recent years at national and international venues in Portugal, Germany, and the southern United States. Sullivan has been a guest conductor and clinician in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, and Texas. His performances have been broadcast on Radio Suisse, WFIU's Harmonia Uncut, KASU's Arkansas Roots, and KJNB FOX and CBS. Sullivan has presented at the World Symposium for Choral Music, the International Society for Music Education, and Southwestern and Southern ACDA conferences. He has also published in the International Journal for Research in Choral Singing, the Australian National Choral Association's Sing Out! magazine, and the Choral Journal.

Occupational health for choral conductors is an emerging field that investigates the unique health risks associated with ensemble leadership. Conductors face a heightened risk of injury, particularly during the middle and later stages of their careers, yet training in injury prevention is rarely included in post-graduate education or employer-provided support. This practical session will outline potential risk factors for choral conductors with a focus on common injuries, environmental factors, and pedagogical adaptations. Participants will be introduced to warm-ups and cooldowns specifically for conducting, principles of movement efficiency, and strategies to make conducting practice more sustainable. Guided group discussion on risk factors, behavioral modifications, and musical outcomes will equip attendees with tools to safeguard their health for future professional success.
