The Evolution of Brazilian Choral Music from Baroque to Present

Session Abstract: The Evolution of Brazilian Choral Music will be explored in this session through recordings and scores from the Baroque period to the present day. Participants will learn various new Brazilian music from different periods and genres and find where to access that music for performance (website for the score—public domain or publisher). A discussion will take place about the performance practices of each piece and period.

Matheus Cruz is a DMA student in choral conducting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Cruz concluded his master's degree in choral conducting at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2020. Before he arrived in the United States, Cruz received an artist diploma in choral conducting from the State University of Londrina and a degree in music education at the State University of Maringá. His articles "Choral singing and the elderly – rehearsal as a moment of great possibilities" were published in the Brazilian Music Educators Association 2014 and "Choosing the choral repertoire: a conductor's task?" in Musica Hodie's magazine -2016.
