What are the Immersion Choirs?
The 2023 National Conference Immersion Choirs are FREE, optional experiences intended to provide artistic, cultural, and educational experiences for attendees to actively engage in while at the conference. You are encouraged to immerse yourself in a wealth of literature, styles, and rehearsal techniques that may be different from your own traditions and experiences.
Two Immersion Choirs are offered in each track. Gold track Immersion Choirs are the Black Diaspora and the Indigenous People’s Immersion Choirs. Blue track Immersion Choirs are the Vocal Jazz and the Latinoamérica Immersion Choirs. Participation in these choirs is optional. Participation is limited to 200 participants per choir.
Black Diaspora Immersion Choir: All members are invited to rehearse and perform music reflecting, honoring, and commenting about the Black Diaspora: the involuntary dispersion of Africans and the subsequent culture and traditions that were born into the fabric, lives, and music of Black Americans. Participation is welcomed by any conference member as our hope is that all the immersion choirs will demonstrate the wealth of diversity, inclusivity, and experience levels in any given area. The Black Diaspora Immersion Choir will be conducted by J. Donald Dumpson.
Indigenous People’s Immersion Choir: All members are invited to rehearse and perform music of indigenous people and traditions including but not limited to areas of North America (Alaska, Canada, the Dakotas, Greenland, Hawaii). Some of the repertoire will be taught by rote and the aural tradition. The Indigenous People’s Immersion Choir will be conducted by Jace Saplan.
Latinoamérica Immersion Choir: All members are invited to rehearse and perform music of Latin America (Central America, Caribbean, Mexico, and South America) rich in its vibrant Spanish, Portuguese, and French inspired languages and the myriad of Latin rhythms and instrumental influences. The Latinoamérica Immersion Choir will be conducted by María Guinand.
Vocal Jazz Immersion Choir: All members are invited to the Vocal Jazz Immersion Choir to hone jazz techniques on specially crafted, instrumentally influenced arrangements that honor this uniquely American art form. The choir will be accompanied by a full rhythm section, and members will focus on the application of choral techniques in a style that uniquely encourages participants to be stylistically flexible and creative. The Vocal Jazz Immersion Choir will be conducted by Matt Falker.
What about Reading Packets for R & R Sessions?
This year, the R & R team will be offering “Deep Dive” sessions. Instead of the usual “read 15 pieces in an hour,” R & R’s will be offering reading sessions that focus on 3 or 4 specific pieces that are unified by theme or concept. Descriptions of these sessions will be available in the Program Book & app.
Virtual reading sessions will be offered post-conference for all ACDA members in the mid-Spring to assist you in selecting your repertoire needs for next fall.
Reading Packets for the Deep Dives will be available in the ACDA app & the JW Pepper app for FREE. However, you will have the option to purchase hard copy packets for $5.00 each during the conference registration process through February 1, 2023. You will pick your packet up on-site at the conference upon registration.
