Rounds: An Under-Utilized Genre that Enhances Inclusion and Community
Session Abstract: As we consciously build environments, methods and repertoire welcoming to diverse populations (of varying cultures, ages, abilities, training), the musical genre of rounds is often overlooked and assumed to be simplistic. Sophisticated rounds, however, afford a rich musical medium that augments accessibility while remaining challenging, and invites a collective feeling of community.
In this repertoire-oriented session, we’ll highlight the ways this genre can enhance both rehearsals and concert programs. We’ll also discuss how definitions of various canonic forms have changed over the centuries (canons, rounds, catches) and will include these and other related partner-song forms in the session.
