Using World Music to create a Culturally Responsive Classroom

Stefanie Cash
Berry College

Session Abstract: This session will look at the benefits of world music usage as a means to promote unity, explore and celebrate diversity, and engage all students. The eight tenants of Culturally Responsive Teaching, as well as the three networks of learning from Universal Design for Learning will be used to explore how to use culture, text, current events, and musical elements to establish cross-cultural appreciations that lead to a stronger sense of community in the classroom and beyond, while presenting material in a pedagogical manner that meets all learners needs in the classroom.
