Well, Imagine That!

Jerry McCoy
Regents Professor Emeritus, North Texas State University

Session Abstract: Choral song arises from the interaction of the intent of the poetry as seen through the imagination of the composer. How we approach this interaction defines the expressive power of our choral singing. Gerald Finzi, a well-known twentieth century English composer, believed that a composer must be chosen by a text. If we as conductors are to follow Finzi's lead, there are a number of poetic/musical elements that must be considered. Such expressive elements are defined by our own interpretive imaginations. This session will explore how to build and enhance our, and our students', interpretive imaginations.
